PAUL WEEKS is aiming to create FA Cup history when he takes charge of Almondsbury Town for the last time against Yate Town at Oaklands Park on Saturday (3pm).

The 37-yeard old has agreed to become the new manager of Zamaretto League Division One South and West strugglers Cinderford Town, with Almondsbury assistant-manager and key defender Steve Peters also set to join him.

It could be an emotional farewell for Weeks and Peters, especially if Almondsbury can cause an upset and beat local rivals Yate to reach the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history and earn the club £3,000 prize money as a leaving present in the process.

However, Weeks is keen to shift the attention away from himself in what he says is the second biggest game in the club’s history after the FA Vase final at Wembley 30 years ago.

He said: “We want to make sure that everyone is given an opportunity to succeed and we’ve got more than enough in place to compete with Yate. It is not about me, it is about Almondsbury beating Yate in the FA Cup and all I want to concentrate on is Saturday.

“It’s a massive opportunity and the players need to do it for themselves and prove what a great side they are.

“It is the biggest game in a while, it’s probably a close second to the FA Vase final in the history of the club.”

Almondsbury Town chairman Bob Jenkins said: “Up until six o’clock on Saturday he is Almondsbury Town manager so we’re just concentrating on a big FA Cup game and trying to get some local bragging rights.

Former QPR and Yate goalkeeper Weeks enjoyed three seasons as a player at Cinderford in the 90s.

He helped dump them out of the FA Cup less than two weeks ago as he masterminded Almondsbury’s 2-1 victory in the Preliminary Round to set up the eagerly anticipated First Qualifying Round tie with Yate.

Almondsbury are currently third in the Hellenic Premier League and look set to be amongst the promotion contenders again but the lure of managing at Southern League level proved too strong for Weeks.

He arrived as manager of Almondsbury in November 2005 when the club were bottom of the league and he kept them up comfortably.

The next season they finished fifth and Weeks came within a whisker of taking them into the Southern League in the 2007/08 season only for them to lose out on goal difference following a defeat on the final day.

Last season he led them to fourth in the Hellenic Premier League and won his first piece of silverware with the SBJ Insurance Challenge Cup triumph.

His last league game in charge was a 2-2 draw at home to Kidlington on Saturday - Almondsbury’s 21st game unbeaten in all competitions.
