DESPITE the incessant rain and strong winds, Chipping Sodbury and Thornbury served up an entertaining local derby.

Thornbury started the brighter with the swirling wind in their favour but the home side were dangerous on the break.

The home keeper was troubled by high balls into the area, but the Thorns strikers couldn’t capitalise when he dropped the ball following an Adam Harley free kick.

A James DeRosa run down the right saw him play a defence splitting pass but just a fraction too far ahead of the unmarked Steve Thompson.

Thorns forced a number of corners and a Chris Parry inswinger from the left was clawed out from under the bar by the home keeper.

Shortly after another corner from the left saw the ball spread out to Matt Morrison just outside the box, but his shot was just too high.

Ten minutes into the second half Thornbury goalkeeper Rob Malcolm had already pulled off a couple of saves before Sodbury forced a couple of corners on the left.

A ball whipped in from the left saw Paul Harris run in from the edge of the box to slot home.

The goal fired up the home side but the Thornbury defence withstood the pressure and they gradually clawed their way back into the game.

The introduction of substitute Danny Thompson seemed to liven up Town’s attack and within a couple of minutes, following a run across the edge of the penalty area, he threaded a pass through to brother Steve, whose shot hit the angle of the crossbar and post.

Steve Thompson had a number of other chances to level the scores but saw the keeper pull off good saves and both he and Steve Alexander had efforts that went narrowly wide.

However, with less than ten minutes left, a corner from the right wasn’t cleared by the Sodbury defence and Danny Thompson rifled home an unstoppable shot from 25 yards.

The final few minutes saw both sides pushing to grab the winner, with both keepers having to pull off saves to keep the score level.

This Saturday Thornbury entertain Hanham Athletic at the Mundys, 2pm.

l Thornbury Reserves enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 home win against Uley to maintain their rise up the table.

Whilst it was a good team performance, the Reserves were inspired by Ashley Lloyd, who was involved in the build up to a couple of the goals.

Andy Rice scored for the second week running, whilst Troy Simpson, after a lean spell in front of goal, hit two.
