Hockey: Barnett seals Thornbury win

9:00am Friday 5th February 2010

TWO goals from Zoe Barnett, the first after ten minutes and the second two minutes from the final whistle, earned Thornbury a hard earned victory.

The home side, promoted together with Thornbury last season, came more into the game following continuous pressure from Thornbury and equalised midway through the first half.

Thornbury gained a short corner and a Katie Bridgeman shot was saved on the line.

Old Bristolians cleared quickly up field against a visiting side lacking a number of players still up field following the corner.

Clever interpassing between four players, who outnumbered the two Thornbury defenders, created the scoring opportunity and Thornbury’s Sophie Wilkins had no chance with the powerful shot.

Thornbury gradually regrouped and were able to stop any further home attacks.

They continued to miss scoring opportunities and with time running out, Zoe Barnett grabbed the vital goal from the edge of the circle.

Thornbury entertain Dursley on Saturday at Castle School, 3.30pm.

Both Thornbury 2nds and 3rds had their games postponed because of the heavy overnight frost.

Sarah Stewart’s side visit Knowle on Saturday whilst the 3rds have a friendly against South Gloucs at Castle School, 12pm.
