Football: Cook lifeline comes too late for Hallen

4:43pm Wednesday 10th March 2010

HALLEN suffered a home defeat at the hands of Willand Rovers.

On six minutes, Hallen were caught on the back foot and went behind a speculative lob looped over home keeper Steve Scannell, who was some eight yards off of his line.

Hallen were awarded a free kick from which the visiting keeper did well to tip a shot from Ronnie Mowatt just over the bar.

Willand should have gone further ahead after half-an-hour when a striker was through on goal with Hallen defenders standing still hopefully appealing for offside.

Ten minutes later the visitors sprung the offside trap again and Scannell had to race from the penalty area to retrieve the situation.

Two minutes into the second period Willand doubled their lead when they got to the byline and pulled the ball back to an unmarked player who side-footed a shot across Scannell and into the far corner.

Willand were now dominating the game but Hallen were thrown a lifeline when Matty Knight arrived into the penalty area where he hit the deck and Andy Cook made no mistake with the spot kick.

But any hope were short lived when the visitors put a volley past Scannell in added time.
