Football: In-form Thornbury win at Brimscombe

4:47pm Wednesday 10th March 2010

THORNBURY Town extended their winning streak to four games on Saturday following a fairly comfortable win.

They almost took the lead in the third minute when Jack Barnes’ header went the wrong side of the post, and a minute later Steve Alexander shot narrowly wide.

After 15 minutes Thorns got the goal that their opening efforts deserved when the ball was played out to Steve Alexander just inside the Brimscombe half.

He set off towards goal and brushed aside two challenges before driving his shot low past the keeper from 12 yards out.

Thorns doubled the lead almost immediately with an almost identical goal. This time Barnes picked up the ball before driving towards the Brimscombe goal and firing low past the keeper.

Town almost extended their lead on 40 minutes when James DeRosa spotted the keeper off his line but his lob landed on the roof of the net.

The second period saw Brimscombe enjoy more possession they could not wrest the midfield initiative from Thornbury where man of the match Matt Morrison dominated proceedings with some timely challenges and pin-point through balls.

Steve Alexander hit the post and minutes later Alexander took the ball wide before crossing, but DeRosa could not keep his shot down.

15 minutes from time Thorns should have wrapped the points up, when an Ashley Lloyd cross from the right found Steve Thompson in space. His first time effort was bundled off the line, straight back to the striker’s feet and as he drove the ball goalwards once more the home keeper pulled off a superb reaction save.

This Saturday Thornbury entertain local rivals Yate Town Reserves, who have enjoyed a good run lately and moved up to second spot in the table. The game is at the Mundy Fields, 3pm.
