Bristol Rovers fans’ panel by Jeff Bolitho

ROVERS fans had to pinch themselves as the goals flew in at the County Ground on Saturday and were left in a state of shock by the final whistle.

Swindon were unbeaten since they tasted defeat at the Memorial Stadium last December, while the Pirates hadn’t won away since the wheel was invented - or at least it felt like it. Few gave the Gas a chance of returning with even a point and a 4-0 scoreline was beyond the wildest imagination.

A well taken goal by Jo Kuffour, who looks back to his best, set Rovers on their way and was quickly followed by Paul Heffernan’s second goal of his loan spell with the club. The Doncaster marksman continues to impress and news that we have now secured his services for the rest of the season is a welcome boost.

A brilliant free kick by Chris Lines gave Rovers a comfortable 3-0 lead at half-time and meant his tally of goals from midfield this season now stands at 11.

Fortunately he signed a new contract this season, as there is no doubt that scouts from the Championship will be monitoring his progress closely while he continues to dazzle.

A goal for Jeff Hughes in the second half was the icing on the cake and completed an outstanding team performance and a famous victory over our local rivals.

Hopefully the away day blues have now been banished and the Gas can follow that up with more victories on the road this month.

If that can be achieved, coupled with our impressive home form, then the play-offs could still be a possibility.

One team usually puts together a late run to sneak into the top six, just as Rovers themselves did during our promotion season from League Two.

Finding the consistency that has eluded us this season is the key, but confidence has to be sky high after Saturday’s emphatic victory and let’s hope the players grasp this opportunity.

A win against Tranmere on Saturday is needed to continue the winning run and leave us dreaming of a trip to Wembley in May.
