Football: Forest Green move a step closer to the drop

9:08am Thursday 18th March 2010

RELEGATION appears to be on the cards for Dave Hockaday’s side as Forest Green lost a crucial six-pointer against Gateshead on Tyneside last night.

The defeat now sees the New Lawn outfit eight points behind the Tynesiders who lost 8-0 at Rushden & Diamonds on Saturday.

Gateshead took a 10th minute lead when Phil Turnbull's shot took a wicked deflection for Graeme Armstrong to volley in.

It was all Gateshead as Daryl Clare had an effort ruled out for offside and then shot past the post from a Winn cross.

Forest Green’s first effort on goal saw Tomi Ameobi head a Conal Platt free-kick straight at Paul Farman who was then almost beaten by Reece Styche.

Rovers netted parity when Danny Powell ran from inside his own half to finish clinically.

However, within two minutes Gateshead were back in front when Winn lashed home a 30 yard angled volley past Danny Ireland.

Only a double Ireland save prevented further goals in injury time.

After the break Winn fizzed over from 25 yards before a Farman pass almost gifted Powell an equaliser .

Wake tmade the game safe for Gateshead when he shot low into the bottom corner after Ireland had palmed clear a Wayne Phillips cross shot.
