ALMONDSBURY TOWN moved joint top of the league with a 2-0 victory over Malmesbury Victoria on Tuesday night - but their future remains unclear as they continue to seek a solution for their ground situation next season.

Yate Town, Mangotsfield United and Slimbridge have all rejected approaches from the Hellenic Premier high-flyers to use their facilities next season and the club are still locked in negotiations with their current landlords, the Gloucestershire FA.

They must leave the clubhouse at Oaklands Park by May 31 and are waiting to hear back from the GFA about new plans to build a temporary module in the car park after an initial plan was turned down.

Chairman Bob Jenkins said: “We’re still in negotiations but we would like to know what we are doing for next season.”

He remains confident that the situation will be resolved in time and insists it will not scupper their promotion application to the Southern League as they still have the option of the one-year lease at Oaklands Park, which has the grading for the higher level.

However, they would need to be able to use a clubhouse on site should they win promotion. Jenkins said he is still considering other options and remains in negotiations with other clubs about a possible ground share move.

Meanwhile, things continue to go smoothly on the pitch for Almondsbury as they moved level on points with league leaders Reading Town after trailing by 16 points at one stage, and they still have three games in hand.

However, boss Richard Thompson refuses to get carried away, saying: “It is still the same, we’ve got nine league games to be played in April and a couple in the cup so we’ve got games all along the way.

“We have still got a quarter of the season left - no-one has won promotion with a quarter of the season left, and we’ve got some really tricky games.”

Aaron Blakemore struck the bar as Almondsbury struggled to break down Malmesbury in the first half before Ross Stearn was brought down in the box on 52 minutes and scored from the resultant penalty.

They wrapped the game up when Sahr Kabba ran down the left flank and pulled the ball back from the byline for Blakemore to head home.

Beyond next season, Almondsbury are still in negotiations play at Filton College’s WISE Campus.

Work is now underway to build a stadium there after Bristol Academy Women’s side were confirmed as one of the founding members of the FA Women’s Super League, starting in March 2011.

It is set to be the country’s first stadium dedicated to women’s football.

l Last Saturday, Aaron Cornwall hit a hat-trick as Almondsbury won 4-1 at Shrvenham.

The game started badly for the Almonds when after only three minutes a Shrivvy corner saw Tate Hulbert hammer the ball towards the goal and the ball ricocheted off Stewart Jones’ leg, hit Aaron Blakemore and rolled into the net.

The equaliser came four minutes into the second half when a long cross field ball found Cornwall unmarked at the far post to slide it into the net.

Cornwall missed a penalty but made up for it six minutes later when Sahr Kabba broke down the left and crossed to the far post where he was on hand to give the Almonds the lead.

Cornwall then scored with a 25-yard free kick.

The fourth came a minute later when Ross Stearn hit a low cross which goalkeeper Kurtis Sharkey could not hold, and Kabba was on hand to tap in the rebound.

l Almondsbury are holding are race night at Oaklands Park on Saturday from 6pm to 8pm to raise money for Paul Chenoweth.

The midfielder suffered a broken leg earlier this season and is due to come out of plaster next week.
