ALMONDSBURY TOWN need one win from their last three games to win the league thanks to Dale Peckham’s late equaliser at Abingdon.

On the same ground where Almondsbury lost 1-0 to miss out on promotion on the final day two seasons ago, they were forced to come from behind as they moved a step closer to the Southern League.

Almondsbury are seven points clear of Reading Town - who are unable to catch them with just two games left - and third placed Shortwood United.

Three points at home to Ascot on Saturday (3pm) would clinch the title, as would any slip up from Shortwood, but boss Richard Thompson is not taking anything for granted as his side tries to cope with a hectic schedule.

He said: “It’s starting to get very difficult with all these games, they are starting to catch up now and teams are playing completely different against us.

“All they want to do is beat Almondsbury so it’s making it really difficult.

“The games aren’t easing up and the players aren’t getting fitter so we’ve got to try and battle through it.”

Almondsbury’s other two games are also at home with Binfield the visitors to Oaklands Park on Monday, before the final game against Bicester Town on Saturday, May 1, with a GFA Challenge Trophy final against Shortwood United in between next Thursday.

Thompson admitted: “If anyone said at the start of the season your last three games are at home and you’ve got to win one of them to win the league everyone would have taken it.”

Abingdon dominated the first half against Almondsbury but it remained 0-0 at half-time.

The Almonds came into it more after the break as Sahr Kabba and Ross Stearn saw shots saved before Todd Winter hit the bar.

However, Abingdon capitalised on a poor Lee Jefferies clearance to take the lead on 65 minutes.

With five minutes left, Peckham headed in from a corner to earn Almondsbury a valuable point.
