Winterbourne suffered defeat at home to promotion-chasing Claverham.

Claverham decided to bat first and set off at six an over. In Rich Foot’s second over, he induced the soft dismissal of Dan Wright (28) with the score at 81.

Navin Nayak then came on and bowled Richard Horton (60), who had reached his 50 from 60 balls.

Skipper Matt Davis and Damien Devanny progressed matters to 159 before the latter was adjudged leg before for 29.

Davis (36) gave a catch to Foot at short mid-wicket, before a quick-fire 20 from Lloyd Richardson with James Clack put the visitors in a strong position. This gave Nayak his fourth wicket as he bowled unchanged for 13 overs to finish with commendable figures of 4-51.

An unbeaten sixth wicket stand involving Clack (29*) and Robbie Hoffeldt (38*) helped to elevate the total.

Winterbourne started brightly enough in their reply with openers Steve Paul and Jon Oakes managing to register 39 from the first seven overs. The introduction of off-spinners James Downes and Devanny proved a different proposition as first Oakes (28) holed out to Keith Miles at long-on, then Paul (36) was given out leg before, both to Downes. The bowler also accounted for James and Ross Williams for 17 and seven respectively.

James Taverner (7), then Nayak (22) fell and a promising stand between Foot (19) and Sam Bracey (7) came to an end when the young wicketkeeper was run out.

Dave Andrews (13) shared in a partnership of 33 before he became Downes’ fifth scalp. Henry Isack (2-39) picked up the final two batsmen to lbw decisions to see his side home.

WEPL Bristol & North Somerset 2nd XI Division Claverham (233-6) beat Winterbourne (232-9) by four wickets

For the second week in a row Winterbourne failed to post a total they were able to defend, this time against Claverham.

Opener Keith Ford contributed 52, and with 30s from Paul Tovey, Damian Lingard and Marcus Purnell, the visitors posted 232- 9.

Despite the early losses of Jonathan Alston (1), Roger Copeland (3) and Sam Waring (18), Claverham had Jon Watts (83) and James Bird to thank for a 108 run fourth wicket stand to keep the hosts in the hunt. It was left to Matthew Crocker (27*) and wicketkeeper Jamie Hooper (11*) to see them through.

Adam Moore collected 3-41 from 13 overs for the hosts.

Winterbourne’s loss and wins for Bishopston and Chipping Sodbury have caused a three-way tie at the top of the table between the clubs, all locked on 17 points.

Despite the best efforts of Winterbourne medium pacer Brian Cook (7-31), his side went down to promotion-chasing University of Bristol Staff.

The visitors batted first with Simon King making 40, with several other batsmen making 20s as they were restricted to 189, Cook being the fifth bowler used.

He was instrumental in not allowing the score to get away from the hosts.

Winterbourne’s batters were not able to settle, Jon Drake removing the middle order to claim 4-61.

Opener Chris Pitt top-scored in the second innings, but the tie ended with a run out, six overs being unused.

BDCA ‘A’ XI Division One Pak Bristolians III (228) beat Winterbourne ‘B’ XI (183-8) by 45 runs

Winterbourne travelled to Soundwell looking for their sixth win of the season but returned empty handed.

Pak Bristolians were able to use their knowledge of conditions to gain the upper hand.

Having first use of the track, they lost two wickets in Ben Carter’s first over, but then built a strong base with Saleem (47) and Nazeem (66).

Late runs from Waqas (33) and Azeem (21) allowed them to set a challenging 229 to win.

Opener Ben Carter was the most successful bowler taking 3-37 from 12 overs.

Derek Comley again continued with his recent good form with the bat for Winterbourne, this time leading the way with 74, including 11 fours.

He did not have much in the way of support, with only skipper Nick Bracey (22) able to stay for long, before the setting sun caused its problems and meant that the visitors were restricted to 183-8.

This week Winterbourne face league leaders Downend 3rds at home, 2pm.
