YATE TOWN manager Dave Mogg has called for his side to be more ruthless at both ends of the pitch after they were denied all three points by a late Almondsbury equaliser in the Zamaretto Division One South & West derby clash on Monday.
Mark Reynolds had given Yate the lead in the 53rd minute but also had a shot cleared off the line by Almondsbury defender Stuart Nelson before the home side sat back and Ross Stearn levelled terms in the 88th minute.
Mogg said: “When we went 1-0 up we seemed to stop playing.
“The ball was coming back too cheaply and when we did get the opportunity we didn’t kill it off when the lad blocked it on the line.
“We’ve got to me more ruthless at both ends, we’ve got to learn to start keeping clean sheets and when we get the opportunities we’ve got to take them.”
Mogg praised 21-year-old winger Jake Cox, who was the best outfield player on the pitch and set up Yate’s goal.
“The lad’s a talent and out of the five games so far that’s been his best game,” said Mogg.
“If you give him the ball he’s likely to do something. In previous games he’s been quieter but you’ve got to remember he’s been playing County League football for the last two years and Sunday League football for god knows how long.”
Almondsbury Town manager Richard Thompson was pleased to get something out of the game on his return to the hometown club he managed for nine years before being sacked 18 months ago.
He said: “I’ve still got a lot of friends here involved at the club and it was a very strange feeling.
“I can’t say the result wasn’t important but I just wanted to give a good account of myself and for my team to give a good account of themselves and I’m hopeful that’s what they’ve done for the 90 minutes.”
It was the third consecutive league game that Almondsbury have scored in the final few minutes, giving them an extra five points.
Thompson added: “The pleasing thing is we’re showing a bit of character and spirit that no matter what happens at the end of games we’re sticking together as a bunch.”
Goalkeeper Stuart Jones was in fine form as his saves kept Almondsbury in the game and ex-Yate midfielder Dave Anyinsah caused problems as he came off the bench in the second half for his first appearance of the season after a hamstring injury.
Thompson said: “Joner is a class goalkeeper at this level and we’re lucky to have him.
“Dave had an absolute fantastic pre-season and he picked up an injury on the last Thursday and that’s the first time he’s been involved. We’ve thrown him on and he’s a thorn in their side and made things happen.”
Almondsbury will be looking to keep their 100 per cent home record when Thatcham Town visit Oaklands Park on Saturday (3pm).
Thompson said: “The whole Thatcham side now is the old Reading Town side so there might be a little bit in that where we pipped them to the Hellenic title last year so it doesn’t get any easier.”
Meanwhile, Yate travel to Abingdon United, who have won their first three league games.
