A FIFTH wicket stand of 128 between Harry Webb and Craig Scully helped Chipping Sodbury on their way a derby victory over Winterbourne on Saturday.

It was Sodbury’s sixth win in a row, with their only defeat of the season coming at Winterbourne in May, and ensured they kept up the pressure on league leaders Frenchay.

The game was reduced to 39 overs per side due to rain and Sodbury made a nightmare start after being put into bat when they were reduced to 52-4.

Winterbourne seamer Adam Moore (2-47) made early inroads, having Richard Howell (7) caught behind by Keith Ford with Damian Lingard taking a catch to remove Bryan Jater (15).

Pete Edgcombe (2-36) then got in on the act when he bowled Jamie Wakefield (12) and enticed Kris Davis (2) to give wicketkeeper Ford another catch.

However, Webb then smashed 74 off 66 balls with five fours and three sixes to lead the rescue mission before he was run out towards the end of the innings.

Scully offered crucial support and finished unbeaten on 56 from 66 balls, including seven fours, with Andy Neal on six not out from three deliveries.

Like their opponents, Winterbourne also made a bad start to their innings and slipped to 52-4.

Jay Penfold did most of the damage with the ball and caught Winterbourne opener Steve Paul off his own bowling for a duck before Wakefield trapped Matt Crane (9) lbw and bowled George Ford (5).

Penfold then had Jonathan Oakes (14) caught by Webb and Lingard (1) caught by Scully as Winterbourne fell to 58-5.

Phil Purnell and Keith Ford looked to dig their team out of a hole and put on a further 58 for the sixth wicket alone before the former was bowled by Jon Toghill for 38 off 52 balls.

Edgcombe (8) added a further 23 with Keith Ford before he became Toghill’s second victim, caught by Jater to spark a collapse.

Wakefield (3-55) returned to have Marcus Purnell (0) caught by Webb and Ford finally fell for 48 off 50 balls when he was caught by Jater off Toghill (3-27).

Penfold took the final wicket of Moore (2), caught by Scully, to finish with impressive figures of 4-25.

Chipping Sodbury 3rds suffered their first defeat of the season against Timsbury 2nds in Bristol & District Cricket League 2nd XI Senior Division.

Mark Graham top-scored with 21 as Sodbury were bowled out for 116 and Timsbury reached their target with four wickets in hand despite Bradley Arkwright taking 3-24 from 11 overs.

Chipping Sodbury 4ths won by 42 runs at Stothert & Pitt in ‘A’ XI Division One.

All of Winterbourne’s other games were cancelled due to the weather.

* Captain Mike Donaldson hit 83 to help Bristol & North Somerset leaders Frenchay to a four-wicket win at Claverham after Tyrone Isitt and Eddie Williams took five wickets apiece to bowl the hosts out for 143.
