YATE TOWN boss Rob Cousins has warned his side not to take Bodmin Town lightly in the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round on Saturday.

The Bluebells have been knocked out by lower league opposition in the last four years but have seen off Western League sides Melksham Town and Larkhall Athletic to be awarded another home tie against the South West Peninsula League leaders.

And despite the two division gap between the sides, Cousins is not taking anything for granted with £4,500 and a place in the Third Qualifying Round at stake.

He said: “It’s opposition that in the pyramid is lower than us, but like Melksham and Larkhall they’re doing very well in their league so it’s not an easy win. They’ve got experienced players there who have played at a higher level, but it’s about what we do on the day.

“If we’re prepared to roll our sleeves up, give a bit of sweat and a bit of blood if need be to win the game like we did against Larkhall then we’ll be ok, but if we don’t turn up and just go through the motions we’re there to be taken and will come to the ground with a big bump.”

Cousins will be looking to keep a perfect run going against Bodmin. He has yet to lose a cup game in charge after leading Yate to the Gloucestershire Senior Challenge Cup at the end of last season, winning as many knockout games as league matches since replacing Dave Mogg at the helm in February.

However, he insists he should have been celebrating a first win in Southern League Division One South and West this season on Saturday when his side drew 1-1 with Gosport.

Cousins felt Gosport defender Lee Molyneaux should have been sent off when he pulled back Neikell Plummer when through on goal for the penalty, and believes his side had enough chances to win the game.

He said: “Michael Meaker (assistant manager) went to see the referee at half-time and he realised he made a mistake but that doesn’t help us out.

“No-one wants to see anyone sent off, but the rules of the game say if you’re through on goal, one on one with the goalkeeper and brought down in the box it’s a penalty and a red card, but he’s not even booked him.

“You can never dominate a game for 90 minutes, but when you’re on top you’ve got to punish teams. We’re creating things which is a plus.

Cousins added: “There are a few players I’ve got question marks on, because they need to do a bit more outside this football club.

“When they’re on their own they need to get sharper and fitter, they need to question themselves as players, ‘how can I improve myself as a player and help the team go forward.’”

Tom McNeish returns from suspension to face Bodmin, while Sam Duggan is nearing full fitness again, but Scott Thomas is expected to be out a bit longer.

Yate travel to Stourport in a bottom of the table clash on Tuesday.
