Yate Town were punished for failing to put their FA Cup game to bed against South West Peninsula League leaders Bodmin when a late goal from the visitors forced a replay.

However, Adam Carter’s strike in the second minute of injury time was a deserved reward for the Cornish side, who enjoyed their day in the sun against opponents two divisions above them.

Yate goalkeeper Josh Dempsey pulled off a string of magnificent saves to keep out Bodmin up to that point, including one from a Carter penalty in the 65th minute, but the home side missed some good chances of their own to ensure their progress after Michael Meaker had given them a 40th minute lead.

The replay at Bodmin will be played this Wednesday, causing Yate’s bottom of the table league clash against Stourport Swifts on Tuesday to be postponed.

Bodmin started the match playing at a high tempo despite the sweltering heat and they came close to taking a sixth minute lead when Sam Matthews crossed into the box and Yate defender Tom Kington inadvertently headed the ball against his own post before Edd Vahid kept calm on the rebound to cushion the ball into Dempsey’s arms.

In an open game, Yate hit back. After Michael Meaker’s free kick from the right was cleared to Jake Cox the winger appeared to wait too long to deliver the ball into the box, but it was worth it when the delivery eventually arrive to Meaker in space at the far post, but his shot was cleared off the line by Carter.

Tristan Ferguson was handed his first start for Yate after some encouraging substitute performances recently but he should have done better when he escaped his marker from Tyrone Mings’ inswinging corner and headed over from just outside the six yard box.

Bodmin were unable to maintain their pace from the start of the game as the first half wore on and their high risk offside trap was finally breached with five minutes of the half remaining.

Meaker had already been thwarted by the linesman’s flag on several occasions when he got on the end of Ferguson’s flick and took the ball around former Crystal Palace goalkeeper Kevin Miller. The veteran striker had time to check the flag had stayed down and raise his arm for a premature celebration before tapping the ball into the unguarded net.

The visitors were reenergised after the break, and Brokenshire brought a great save off Dempsey with a shot from 15 yards.

Four minutes later, a good Yate move down the left saw Cox reach the byline and stand up a cross to Ferguson, whose header on the stretch came back off the bar.

Bodmin were awarded a penalty when Tom Warren went up for a challenge with substitute Danny O’Hagan from Steve Colwell’s long free kick, and the Yate defender was penalised for handball. Carter’s spot kick was weak, but Dempsey got down well to his right to make the save before Matthews blazed the rebound over.

Dempsey’s best save came when he dived low to his right to keep out O’Hagan’s header from point-blank range following Luke Rundle’s free kick.

Yate continued to invite pressure from the visitors, but had a great chance to seal victory when substitute Neikell Plummer was released by Mings, but he blazed over the bar with just Miller to beat.

Joe White also had a chance to finish the game in injury time when Mark Badman played him through but a bad first touch allowed the defence to recover and his deflected shot was straight at Miller.

The goalkeeper then launched the ball upfield to Carter, who took the ball on and held off the challenge of Warren before sliding past Dempsey.

Further into the ten minutes of stoppage time, Yate appeared to have good claims for a penalty turned down when Plummer went down near the byline under a hard challenge from Brokenshire.
