OLYMPIC rowing gold medallist Peter Reed will make a triumphant return to the New Lawn on Saturday, September 15 with Forest Green planning a half-time celebration for the Nailsworth rowing star.

Rovers, who play Alfreton Town that day are expecting a big crowd to come and show their appreciation for Reed. His arrival is part of wider celebrations planned for the Olympian that day, including a Nailsworth Town Council civic reception.

FGR previously held a reception for Reed - a former Oxford Blue who is currently in The Royal Navy - the last time he came away with Olympic gold in the coxless fours, at Beijing in 2008. Trevor Saunders, general manager at FGR, said: “Peter is an example and inspiration to young sports people in this area and it will be a great moment for fans and visitors to see him back at The New Lawn.

“I know the Forest Green fans will give him an excellent reception at half-time and it will be great to see more people come and show their appreciation.

“The Olympics really demonstrated how we can get behind our sports people in this country. If we can capture some of that spirit again at The New Lawn, it promises to be a special atmosphere. Hopefully, some of Peter’s gold magic can rub off on the team too.”

Rovers have made a good start to the season and are unbeaten in three games going into this Saturday’s home game against Woking and the Bank Holiday Monday clash at Kidderminster Harriers.
