Kids for a quid at FGR

Gazette Series: WELCOME: Trevor Saunders is looking forward to the visit of Olympic legend Pete Reed to the New Lawn on Saturday WELCOME: Trevor Saunders is looking forward to the visit of Olympic legend Pete Reed to the New Lawn on Saturday

OLYMPIC gold medallist Pete Reed will get another chance to inspire the next generation as he appears at half- time during Forest Green Rovers' home match against Alfreton this Saturday afternoon (3pm) – with the club offering a kids-for-a-quid ticket for u16s.

The Nailsworth Olympian – who picked up gold in the coxless fours at London 2012 – can expect a big welcome from his hometown crowd, and the club are keen to make the day a big family event.

Trevor Saunders, general manager at FGR, said: "Pete is hugely popular in this area and has had a remarkable run of Olympic success. It’s important that local people, and in particular local children, get to see him, to show their support and be further inspired by what sport can do.

"With this kids offer, we wanted to make it even easier for families to come along to the match and experience a little bit of that Olympic magic that has inspired so many people over the last few months."

FGR currently lie second in the Blue Square Premier table, but are looking to bounce back after their first defeat of the season away to Grimsby Town last weekend.

Saunders said: "We are in a great position at the moment, but it is important we get back to winning ways on Saturday. Hopefully, some of Pete’s magic dust will be sprinkled on the team and we’ll be spurred on by a great atmosphere on Saturday."

Saturday’s match will also see a new match announcer join the Forest Green ranks – Garry Mitchell, formerly of Severn Sound radio, will be on the mic before and during the game to keep everyone informed and in the mood.
