A WOTTON-UNDER-EDGE youngster has secured a place in the Great Britain under-19 rifle team, after attending a selection camp at the National Shooting ground in Bisley, Surrey.

George Irish, 18, will train with the team of eight top young shooters until March 2013, when he will travel with them to compete in the South Africa Open Championships.

The extreme weather conditions in South Africa will make long distance target shooting challenging, and the squad will benefit from coaching and advice from the more experienced British team, who will also be competing.

They will be shooting at distances ranging from 300 yards to 1000 yards. Irish has had a fantastic year, achieving excellent results in the Canadian Open Championships in the summer, and in the UK.

He captained the England under-25 international match and as an individual and won the Gloucestershire Target Rifle Open Championship in September.
