ROVERS’ resurgence under John Ward continued on Saturday with a magnificent 3-1 win at promotion-chasing Rotherham.

Few fans would have thought the Pirates would have gained six points from our last two away trips, as they were both against top six teams.

But the team proved on Saturday that the excellent recent win at Fleetwood was no flash in the pan and Rovers can no longer be regarded as pushovers in this division.

Those morale-boosting victories have renewed optimism that we can avoid relegation and reignited the support and passion of the fans.

Seeing us move off the bottom of the table on Saturday is another massive boost and now the only way has to be up.

News that midfielder John-Joe O’Toole has extended his loan with the Gas by a further two months has also given everyone a huge lift.

Hopefully we will never again prop up the Football League, although much more hard work lies ahead and many more points are needed before anyone can start thinking about breathing a sigh of relief just yet.

Under Ward, however, we look a different team to McGhee’s disorganised unit that took to the field. Now we have players in their right positions, an exciting blend of youth and experience and a backbone running through the side.

Mildenhall has impressed in goal, we look stronger in defence, O’Toole has added tenacity and quality in midfield and Anyinsah and Richards have been given a new lease of life up front. Ryan Brunt could also prove to be a shrewd acquisition by Ward as he unexpectedly threw him straight into battle on Saturday and led the line well, winning the penalty that set us on the way to victory. Ellis Harrison also seized the opportunity given to him with a stunning solo goal and a performance that belied his 18 years.

There appears to be a confidence and belief running through the players now, with competition for places keeping everyone motivated and determined.

Another three points against Barnet at the Memorial Stadium tomorrow night would move us out of the relegation places and restore faith that we will be playing in the Football League again next season.
