Daily Mail U15 Vase: Penair 10 KLB 20

THE Year 10 side from Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School are two games away from reaching Twickenham.

They face Felsted School from London at home tomorrow for a place in the Daily Mail Vase semi-finals after beating Penair in the last 16.

It is the furthest the school has ever got in the competition and if they win their next two games they will go through to the finals day at headquarters on Saturday, March 23.

KLB had won six matches against some notable opposition to reach this stage, including Colston’s School and Sheldon School in the previous two rounds and Penair provided another stern test.

Played at Truro RFC on a heavy pitch, the game was an even contest with a tense opening quarter as both teams tested each other out. KLB broke the deadlock midway through the first half. Dom Webb, counter-attacking from deep, drew in the Penair defence before slick hands by the backs created space for Chris Colston to go over in the corner.

Penair came back strongly, making inroads through the midfield with strong ball carrying in the centre eventually leading to an equalising score. As the game wore on KLB began to take control.

Strong tackling from the back row put Penair on the back foot and KLB were able to extend their lead with Pete Noone going over in the corner. Penair came back all guns blazing and after a rumble up through the midfield were able to score in the corner. None of the conversions were kicked leaving the scores level at half time.

KLB started the second half brightly, dominating possession and territory. Sustained pressure eventually led to them extending their lead with a first try for Perry Milan out wide.

The decisive try came with just five minutes remaining. Milan, who had worked tirelessly throughout, stormed clear from a ruck and crashed over again to seal the victory.
