WEPL Glos/Wilts Division: Rockhampton (219) lost to Lechlade (232-5) by 13 runs
12:00pm Thursday 8th August 2013 in Gloucestershire Sport
ROCKHAMPTON’S title hopes were dented by a home defeat to high-flyers Lechlade.
With showers forecast for later in the afternoon but conditions seemingly bowler friendly, stand-in skipper Rowan Cartlidge inserted Lechlade in the hope that wickets would come often.
Despite opening pressure from Sandercock and Will Cartlidge, the early optimism was unfounded as wickets were hard to come by with just one falling inside 25 overs.
Despite the pressure applied by six Rockhampton bowlers, Lechlade accumulated runs steadily with little in the pitch to aid any of the Rams attack. Spinner Chris Perry (2-38) was the pick of the bowlers, but Lechlade talisman Joe Breet dug deep to hit a well crafted 113, ably supported by the middle order.
With grey clouds looming, Rockhampton started their run chase knowing that a steady run rate and positive stroke play would be vital. However, tight bowling and some excellent fielding limited the Rams to 32-2.
This wobbly start was quickly combated as James Williams, Guy Brothwood and then Simon Hore began to accumulate runs with shots either side of the wicket. With a rain shower entering the equation, the match was seemingly in the balance with the score at 120-3 with 19 overs left to bat.
Despite no time or overs being lost, it was Lechlade that seized the initiative after the break with the score slumping to 179-7.
With five overs remaining and the free scoring Perry at the crease, the match seemed to be swinging Rockhampton’s way before he was adjudged lbw.
Despite the Rockhampton tail wagging briefly, Will Nichols (5-47) finished off his spell with number 11 Sandercock being caught in the deep.
