ADY Pennock is off shopping in the January sales.

The new Forest Green boss has been given the green light from chairman Dale Vince to dip into the transfer market during the January transfer window and despite being full of support for the squad he inherited from David Hockaday, the former Stoke City first team coach is determined to draft in his own men.

“Players will be leaving and I would like to bring in one or two new faces in if we can,” said Pennock.

“If I bring someone in I don’t want them to be a squad player - I would want them to feature in the starting eleven- I am after quality not quantity.”

Despite the desire for change the FGR boss is delighted with the current players’ application.

He added: “The boys have been brilliant and they’ve been first class- I don’t want to mess the changing room up.

“I don’t think we’re too far away from being a very good team. We’ve just got to tinker a little bit.

“The lads have given me their all since I’ve been here and I can’t fault them for that.”

Pennock refused to name any targets, but is set to trawl the Football League for new recruits.

“We’re looking at players from the league,” he said.

“If you sign league players then hopefully you end up in the league. These type of players have the professional mentality and that’s what we are striving for.

“I have plenty of irons in the fire and I am constantly on the phone and watching games. I am not a fan of watching players on DVD, I like to see them in the flesh.”

Pennock has opted against keeping striker James AlabiI, who has returned to the Premiership club after a month -long loan spell at the New Lawn.

The 19-year-old made three starts and three sub appearances for Rovers, but failed to score in a frustrating spell for the young forward.

Meanwhile, Pennock insists the return of Chris Stokes will be like signing a new player.

The attacking full-back injured his knee against Macclesfield in November, but the former Bolton Wanderers defender is hoping to force his way back into contention later this month (January).

Pennock said: “Having Chris back will be like a new signing for us. Everyone is saying some really good things about him and I am looking forward to working with him.

“We’ve got to be careful with him and Tim Grigg has done a really good job with him.”

Pennock still believes the play-offs are a possibility and will hope to kick-start 2014 with a result at Aldershot on New Year’s Day.

“I am a realist and obviously we would love to make the play-offs and that is something we will be working towards."

Rovers welcome Salisbury City to the New Lawn on Saturday and follow this with a home clash against Hereford on Thursday, January 11.
