Football: Dursley Town must improve to stay up

Gazette Series: (4259872) (4259872)

Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division One

Stonehouse Town 2 Dursley Town 0

IF DURSLEY are to have any chance of avoiding relegation they must produce a run of performances infinitely better than the one served up in defeat at Stonehouse.

As has been the case all season, there was no shortage of effort from the visiting side for much of the time, but there was a chronic lack of craft going forwards.

Terry Stevenson’s side have registered just 18 goals in 17 league matches, scoring more than once just four times and failing to hit the net at all on six occasions.

The first half at Stonehouse highlighted Dursley’s problems perfectly – plenty of industry and a territorial supremacy, but no end product and no real chances.

At the other end, visiting full-back Steve Hobbs kept his side in it by heading off the line, making a last-ditch block and turning a good cross against the post and away.

However, the home side eventually took the lead ten minutes before half-time when a fine through ball put Andy Maryon away and he beat Keith Watson with aplomb.

Dursley failed to up their game after the break and conceded a second goal on the hour mark when Matt Fanstone was left unmarked to lift the ball over the goalkeeper.

The visitors never looked like rallying and completely lost their discipline in the closing stages as several players were spoken to by the referee for a string of bad tackles.

Dursley: K Watson; S Hobbs, C Wilkins (L Jones 70), R Crowcombe, J Stevenson; M Humphrey, L Thomas, C Mills; A Forgione (J Stoneman 70), N Vines (K Ward 65); D Lees.

* It was a miserable day for Dursley at the hands of Stonehouse, who won all three games of the triple-header between the clubs.

At the Rec, the Magpies triumphed 3-0 in the reserve-team clash and 1-0 in the third-team encounter.
