Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division Two

Wotton 3 Vinney St Swithins 2

WOTTON survived a second half comeback from Viney St Swithins to take the spoils.

With just two teams expected to be relegated, Rovers should now be safe.

The first half started brightly and the ball was being moved freely through the midfield partnership of Asa Cox and Simon Graham, linking with wingers Cameron Pring and Korey Pring.

Cameron was the first to strike and he grabbed his first goal of the season in style. He took control of the ball in his own half and knocked the ball into the corner, beating all the defenders for pace before cutting inside and driving the ball into the top corner via the crossbar.

Striker Lee Williams was next to get on the scoresheet. A flick-on from Graham resulted in a one-on-one with the keeper and Williams poked the ball wide enough to beat him as it hit the base of the post and went in.

Declan Frost was rewarded for an exceptional performance when he got on the end of a Derek Starkey through ball and had the composure to slide past the onrushing keeper from the edge of the box to put the home side 3-0 up.

With both Prings firing on all cylinders, the Viney defence had barely a minute's rest and looked glad to hear the half-time whistle.

The second half started a lot less brightly for Wotton and Viney only took 5 minutes to claw one back via a neat header at the front post.

There score line was doubled on the hour mark when they got a second.

Wotton's back four of Starkey, Gareth Pedley, Tom Hemmings and Kris Williams stood firm to protect the score line as they got a foot back in the game.

The final 15 minutes were spent in the Viney penalty area and both Prings, as well as Williams, could have increased the score numerous times had it not been for outstanding work from the keeper.

However, Wotton stayed on top until the final whistle to secure all three points from another convincing performance for such a young team.
