Gloucestershire County Youth League

Frampton United 2 Thornbury Town 2 (Frampton won 6-5 on penalties)

FRAMPTON won their first ever Gloucestershire County Youth League championship after coming from 2-0 down against Thornbury and then beating them on a penalty shootout.

Thornbury also achieved their highest finish in the league as runners-up.

The title went down to the wire with a play-off between the top two teams at Lydney Town’s ground.

On 38 minutes, a Thornbury corner was headed into the net by Josh Pirie to open the scoring.

Three minutes later Thornbury doubled their lead when James Thomas rifled in a shot.

Frampton came out for the second half fired up and Nathaniel Wood beat three Thornbury defenders before putting the ball into the net to cut the deficit to a single goal.

The equaliser came 15 minutes later when Nathan Dennis came up from the back and found the net after a scramble in the Thornbury penalty area.

At the end of 90 minutes the game was level at 2-2 and the penalty shootout started.

Ten penalties all hit the back of the net, which under the circumstances was exceptional.

Frampton then netted their sixth penalty, but Thornbury’s sixth struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced back into play.
