LEARNERS from the Preparation for Work and Life Department, based at South Gloucestershire and Stroud (SGS) College's Filton Campus, attended the English College's Football Association National Ability Counts Football Tournament.

Taking place at the home of the Football Association in Burton-on-Trent, the team spent a day at St George's Park playing against colleges from across the country.

Together they won two games, lost two and drew two, which meant they made it to the quarter-finals, losing to local rivals Weston College.

The Ability Counts Football League is for players in FE Colleges with disabilities.

It allows male and female players regardless of ability, the opportunity to play football at a level that they can enjoy.

As part of SGS Active, the college have been successful in creating an Ability Counts football team.

The team train on a weekly basis with a coach from the Gloucestershire FA and compete in the British College's Sport leagues.

They play colleges from across the South West and for this reason were selected to enter the National Ability Counts tournament.

For the first time, the students were lucky enough to play in a brand new football kit, paid for by Wilmot Dixon, who have kindly sponsored the Ability Counts squad this season.

Wilmot Dixon are currently working on the redevelopment of the SGS Wise Campus.

College Sport Maker Ali Hucker said: "This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to take part in such a big competition.

"It was a great day, with some fab football being played. The lads were a credit to the college showing great sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the day.

"None of this would be possible though without the support of Darren Garman and the staff from the Preparation for Work and Life team, who have been working with me and the SGS Active programme throughout the academic year.

"The students were very proud to wear the College logo and compete in a National Tournament, so a massive thank you to Wilmot Dixon for their sponsorship this season."
