Frank Benner Cup U13s Second Round

Rockhampton (107-8) beat Old Down (96-9) by 11 runs

ROCKHAMPTON carried on their cup runs in an entertaining, well-deserved victory over neighbours Old Down.

The Rams started brightly with the bat again, Samuel Long and Cameron Gander putting on 32 for the first wicket.

When Gander was bowled by Maggs for a swift nine, Sam Maskell came to the wicket and punished any wayward deliveries, hitting a run-a-ball 36 (retired) to take the Rams to a commanding position of 86-2 with six overs remaining.

Magee struck twice and Josh Riggs cleaned up the lower order with a very accurate, all-bowled hat-trick the skids were well and truly put on the Rams innings with just seven runs coming from the last five overs.

Long was last to fall for a determined 21.

Old Down weren’t allowed to put runs on the board at any great rate, with Sam Pearmain (1-9) and James Warnock only going for 24 from seven overs combined.

When leg spinner Long (3-9) removed his district team-mate, the dangerous Riggs, and then took two more the game swiftly turned in Rams' favour.

Jamie Alexander bowled tightly at the other end, unlucky to finish with just one wicket, and the team's all round tight fielding display paid dividends with two run outs, a catch and quick stumping.

Louie Wanless picked up a wicket, with Tom Twemlow and Lewis Stolliday also bowling tight overs as the visitors finished 11 runs short.
