FORMER Gloucestershire junior champion Ross Langdon achieved the biggest win of his career with a three-under-par 68 at the Cotswold Edge pro-am.

The 26-year-old South Cerney touring player won outright for the first time to beat four more experienced men by one shot.

This was his first solo success. His only previous win was in a four-way tie at Cirencester three years ago while he was a trainee at Henbury.

The former runner-up in the Total Triumph Order of Merit on the Gloucester and Somerset PGA Winter Series circuit has been threatening to break through this season. He was second at both Ross-on-Wye and North Wilts and fifth in the Assistants Pro Sprint League.

His Cotswold day did not start well as he dropped a shot on the second, fifth and eighth holes, although three birdies brought him level by halfway.

He leapt ahead of the field with three birdies over the four closing holes.

Andrew Sherborne (Trevose) followed his win at nearby Stinchcombe by sharing second.

Like Daryl Kelley (Filton), he made four birdies and two bogeys.

Sion Bebb (Morlais Castle) dropped just one shot while Lee Thompson (Dudsbury) was adventurous. He posted six birdies and dropped four shots.

Mark Searle (High Post) was four-under-par after 11 holes but a bogey at the 14th and a double at the next proved his downfall so he shared sixth with Giuseppe Licata (Bristol Golf Centre) and Dan Carter (Upavon).

Barry Austin (Downes Crediton) made an even better start. An eagle two at the 276-yard fourth following three opening birdies took him to five-under. But he shed five shots in his final seven holes.

Players Club teaching professional Ian Watts made his first appearance for four years to lead Dan Johnson, Ian Wilcox and Tracy Tomlin into first place in the team event on 13-under-par 129.

Christian Vine (Woodbury Park) with Richard Brock, Dave Clutterbuck and Terry Pearce were second one shot behind.

Upavon assistant Dan Carter steered the club’s junior team of Alex Godfrey, Mitchell Smith and Callum Sankey into third on 131.
