KATHARINE Lady Berkeley’s School pupil Yvette Westwood and Yate & District AC member Adam Wilson will compete at this year’s national Sainsbury’s School Games in Manchester.

The Games are an elite level multi-sport event for school children that take place from Thursday, September 4 to Sunday, September 7, supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust.

The event is the highest level of school competition, following levels one to three which take place locally.

Westwood will race for England South West in the 200m athletics.

The 15-year-old from Wotton-under-Edge, whose greatest sporting success is becoming the Under-17 Avon AA County champion, has been training with Paralympic athletes at Bath University, including two-time World champion and former record holder Paul Blake, former world record holder and multiple medallist at World Championships Ben Rushgrove, Sophie Kamlish, a medallist at World Championships and Commonwealth champion, and former World champion Katrina Hart.

South Gloucestershire and Stroud College ace Wilson has also been selected for the England South West athletics squad.

Wilson, 17, is the only Gloucestershire athletics competitor to be competing in multiple disciplines when he will compete in the 400m and the 1500m disability athletics.

His greatest sporting achievement is breaking Andrew Kaar’s championship record at the Mencap National Championships in 2013.

Wilson's greatest sporting occasion was having the opportunity to watch his classification compete at the Paralympics in London 2012.

Competition is held in 12 current and future Olympic and Paralympic sports: fencing, rugby sevens, gymnastics, hockey, badminton, athletics, cycling, judo, swimming, table tennis, volleyball and wheelchair basketball.

The Sainsbury’s School Games have a strong track-record of providing a springboard for athletes who then go on to compete at a national level.

Several School games alumni went on to be part of London 2012 Team GB and Paralympics GB, including:Paralympic gold medallists Ellie Simmonds, Hannah Cockroft and Jonnie Peacock along with GB sprinter Adam Gemili, heptathlete Katrina Johnson-Thompson and Olympic bronze medallist gymnasts, Max Whitlock and Sam Oldham.

The competition aims to re-enforce the experience of Olympic and Paralympic Games complete with opening and closing Ceremonies and will give Britain an insight into the make-up of their teams for both the 2016 and 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
