Forest Green boss Ady Pennock was forced into a pre-match tweak of his squad after Clovis Kamdjo failed a fitness test.

Veteran striker Lee Hughes dropped to the bench. Elliott Frear and Rob Sinclair returned to the starting line-up, but there was no place in the squad for Luke Rodgers.

Rovers conjured the first worthwhile goalscoring opportunity inside the opening 10 minutes.

A free-flowing move, started by Jon Parkin, saw Marcus Kelly and the impressive Sinclair trade passes for James Norwood to scamper beyond a flat-footed Wrexham defence, but he contrived to poke his strike wide of Daniel Bachmann’s far-post.

Moments later, Danny Coles did well to snuff out a Wrexham attack.

Joe Clarke smashed a shot into the advertising boards as Wrexham threatened to break the stalemate.

Only a wonder stop from former Wrexham keeper Sam Russell denied Connor Jennings a 30th minute goal.

Russell showed soft hands to claw Jennings’ goal-bound header away and was relieved to see the subsequent Louis Moult strike and Jennings follow-up go wide.

At the other end, Bachman made two fine stops within a minute as Rovers found their feet. He smartly gloved over a 39th minute free-kick and then palmed away a Parkin header from a Kelly corner.

On the cusp of the interval, Rob Evans saw yellow for Wrexham following a lunge on Parkin.
