FA Vase First Qualifying Round

Slimbridge 1 Kidlington 0

SLIMBRIDGE progressed to the FA Vase second qualifying round courtesy of an 83rd minute strike from Dean Turner against their old Hellenic League rivals Kidlington, just as it looked as if the game was going to extra-time.

Turner's winning goal sees the Swans rewarded with another home tie in the next round to another Hellenic side – they will entertain Oxford City Nomads at Wisloe Road on October 4.

In a game which quickly settled into a game of attrition between the sides, an entertaining first period saw play switch from end to end.

Sean Lawson's early shot, which was blocked, was followed by a period of pressure from the visitors although they were unable to carve out any clear chances.

A Slimbridge breakaway saw Hammond go on a powerful run, only to see his shot saved by Kidlington keeper Matthew Hyslop.

Kidlington's best early chance came on 15 minutes when a long range shot from Lewis Coyle saw Dave Evans make a good save to keep the scores level.

Hyslop was again called into action, this time tipping a superb strike from Lawson onto the bar, and another two great saves from Jamie Hammond and then Jamie Martin kept things even at half-time.

On 58 minutes, Kidlington's Tom Castle deserved better for a superb turn and strike which cannoned back off the Swans post with Evans nowhere.

Two more good chances came for the home side as Rich Thwaite's header from Martin's corner went just wide and then Lawson somehow failed to convert a Martin cross with the goal gaping in front of him.

The game was decided seven minutes before the end when Turner picked up a ball on the edge of the Kidlington box and drilled home for the all-important winner.

Hammond sustained what looked like a serious ankle injury in the build up to the goal and had to be carried from the pitch.

The Swans have a GFA Challenge Cup tie on Tuesday at Almondsbury UWE, before returning to Wisloe Road on Saturday when Cadbury Heath are the visitors. This is a change from the original fixture scheduled, as Longwell Green Sports, the original opponents, are in FA Cup action.
