North Glos Veterans Football League

Whitminster 1 North Nibley 3

NORTH Nibley got their first league win of the season with an outstanding performance at league leaders Whitminster.

The visitors, missing some key players, started the game poorly and went 1-0 down after 15 minutes with some individual mistakes in the defence costing them dear.

It could have been worse minutes later but for an outstanding pin-point save from Ian Evans in the Nibley goal.

This spurred Nibley into action and could have easily resulted in a couple of goals before half-time with good chances for Scott Harvey and Paul Drennan going begging.

Nibley drew level two minutes from the interval when good work from Steve Jones was superbly finished off from 15 yards out by Darren Richards.

The second half started much better for Nibley with the midfield of Chris Jones, Steve Jones, Simon Lloyd and Scott Harvey getting on top and after 50 minutes a ball over the top was latched onto by Richards, who was taken down by the Whitminster keeper.

He picked himself up to slot home the penalty and make it 2-1.

Nibley piled on the pressure and made it 3-1 after 60 minutes when Lloyd chipped the keeper from 25 yards out.

Whitminster came back strong and Jon Cruse conceded a penalty with 10 minutes left but it was brilliantly saved by Evans and Nibley held on for a well-deserved win.

Nibley travel to Gala Wilton in three weeks.

Star man: Ian Evans.
