THORNBURY start Saturday’s last home Tribute South West One West league game of the season against Avonmouth Old Boys looking for revenge following defeat to their near-neighbours earlier in the season.
Thorns “didn’t turn up” for their match at Barracks Lane last December and lost 26-5, with an solitary Ed Sheldon try all to show for their efforts. This time Thorns will be pumped-up for the visit of “The Mouth”.
That game was played at the height of the injury crisis that decimated Thornbury’s senior playing squad, but they should be back to full strength nowThornbury have a stronger side for this match at Rockhampton Road.
With Thornbury having lost only one of their plast seven games, at Wells a fortnight ago, there is some confidence within the team particularly as Avonmouth have won only four of their 10 ten games they have played in 2015.
However, Thornbury are notorious for playing without the collective focus or intensity of their very best against sides they should defeat.
The teamsquad and coaches know that Avonmouth have something of an Indian sign over them – it is seven years since Thornbury defeated themAvonmouth in a competitive game,- a Dai Matthews try and Simon Weaver conversion the only scores in a 7-0 win in April 2008.
The ever-popular Simon Weaver is now backs coach at Avonmouth, and he will be well aware of the threat the Thornbury backs pose when on form.
Ed Sheldon has scored twenty league tries this season for Thorns whilest Jak Evans has scored eight and centre Dai Matthews six from a limited number of games. Skipper Liam Pemberton has scored five from the back row.
However, Avonmouth also have powerful strike runners on the wings in the Reynolds brothers, Charlie and Billy who are regular try scorers, both crossing against Thornbury earlier in the season. Forward Dan Lee is also a regular scorer and Joe Wearne an accomplished goal-kicker.
“The Mouth” are one place above Thornbury in the table with a superior points difference of just five.
Thornbury have scored more tries but Avonmouth have won one more game – bonus points making up the balance. The sides are evenly matched and the encounter could be one of the highlights of this season.
The game kicks off at Rockhampton Road at 3pm.  The day includes the annual reunion of Thornbury’s veteran players – “The Vandals” – and is preceded by a demonstration of mini rugby show from Thornbury Broncos the under-eights.
