Yate Town 3 Bashley 1

STRIKER Jordan Rogers came up trumps for Yate Town as he struck twice in the second-half to secure victory against basement side Bashley at Lodge Road.

Town finished the season in sixth place as they turned the game around in the space of 20 second-half minutes to win against the already relegated opposition.

But Bashley can take huge credit for their first-half performance. They have struggled throughout the campaign but they really put Yate to the sword as the home side struggled to get going;.

The visitors looked very dangerous with the pace of the three forwarded when they entered the home half.

And they rightly took the lead through a great counter attack, George Box lost possession and this allowed Bashley to break.

Their rapid striker sold Charlie Hitchings with a fake shot and laid it across the box to his strike partner Dammy Bada to slot the ball home.

Yate were all over the place at the back, and Bashley could of doubled their lead with a free header inside the area from but the header towards goal went wide..

Yate did start to get going five minutes from half time, and could have equalised through Jake Cox with a header at the back post but he could not direct it towards goal and it went wide.

But manager Craig Laird must have said a few words to the team at the interval because Yate came out for the second period much the better side.

It was an own goal seven minutes into the second- half that got Yate back into the game and saw the visitors start to collapse.

A great delivery from Mitch Tippins at a free kick saw the ball hit the back of a Bashley defender and find its way into the back of the net.

Despite getting the equaliser, Bashley's pace up front was still causing Yate’s defence a lot of trouble and if it was for goalkeeper Martin Horsell, who brilliantly denied Bada a second goal, the visitors would of took the lead.

But the last section of the second period belonged to Rogers as he grabbed Yate's second on 65 minutes.

A corner to the back post was met by the striker’s head and went flying into the back of the net across the keeper.

Yate could have killed the game off five minutes later when a great link up from Scott Cousins, who was man of the match, and Dominic Thomas saw Cousins run through on goal.

The Yate reserves player, who is also a product of the Yate Development programme, was making his first start for the senior team and squared the ball to Rogers after turning the defender.

However, Rogers, with just the keeper to beat, could not find the target and struck it into the arms of the Bashley man.

But it was another youngster, also making his first team debut, who set up the goal that finished Bashley off.

Lewis Fogg came off the bench and played in a brilliant cross from the left which was controlled with ease by Rogers on his chest and half-volleyed into the back of the net to finish the season on a positive note.
