IT WAS probably one of the less important football results of the season, but Slimbridge's first team defeated a side of Swans’ Legends from previous years 2-1 in a highly entertaining encounter on Saturday.

The match was a fundraiser for club member Cameron Hutchinson who has cancer.

The match saw players rotate on and off the pitch but after Craig Cole had put the Legends ahead in the first half, Jamie Hammond and Ben Tunnicliff both netted to win the game for the Swans’ current side against their illustrious opponents.

Slimbridge manager Leon Sterling made a rare appearance for the Legends side, while assistant Freddy Ward truly lived up to his Legendary status at Wisloe Road by played for both sides at some point during the afternoon.

The real winner, was, of course, Cameron Hutchinson’s Bucket List Fund, which will bank a four figure sum from the afternoon.

A minimum admission price of £1, but with the option to pay more, together with a well-supported raffle and auction left everyone delighted at the end of the event as the proceeds began to stack up.

Club spokesman Tim Blake said: “Everywhere you looked, people were raising money for Cameron. The crowd were incredibly generous both at the turnstiles and in their support of the raffle, all of the players from both sides got involved via contributions of their own, and we had a large amount of donations for raffle and auction prizes, all of which helped to boost takings on the afternoon.

“We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to everyone who helped us raise money for Cam, especially the Legends squad who came along to provide the opposition - it was a real treat to see so many ex-players back at Wisloe Road.”

As both teams lined up, Cameron went along the lines and thanked each player and the officials personally before the game kicked off, and then joined both squads for a group photo before the game kicked off.

Slimbridge will announce the final fundraising total as soon as it has been verified, and will be presenting a cheque to Cameron before Saturday’s home pre-season friendly with Cirencester Town at Wisloe Road, which kicks off at 3pm.
