THE 2015 Thornbury Golf Club Seniors Championship was played as usual over two days and will long be remembered by all who took part — and particularly by the victor Nick Gore.
The near ideal conditions were reflected in the scoring. The overnight leader was Gore, who shot an excellent gross 73. Derek Lewis was unfortunately not available on the second day as he led the nett competition with a four-under-par 67, closely followed by Colin Williams-Locke on 68.
Conditions for day two could not have been more different as the rain fell incessantly and at times heavily on the picturesque Thornbury course, which stood up remarkably well, but conditions became very demanding as both players and their equipment got wetter.
Many felt that staying at home was a better option and others decided to seek refuge and a change of clothes in the clubhouse after just nine holes.
For those who stuck it out, scoring was highly variable.
But Gore held on to his lead despite the trying conditions to win the championship trophy with an aggregate 152.
Second prize went to Paul Pollard, who carded a solid second round of 85 to finish on 171, with past captain Lindsey Henniker-Heaton third on 180.
In fact, Mike Sanders had the second best total with two rounds of 82 but as he won the other trophy of the day, the Seniors Cup for the best nett score with an aggregate 146, this took precedence in the prize list.
After his great sub-par round on day one, Colin Williams-Lock was given second in the nett competition with 148 ahead of Peter Elliot, whose 152 was the result of carding 76 on both days.
Captain Brian McCarthy praised the fortitude of all who took part as he congratulated and presented the winners with their trophies.
