HOURS before Gloucestershire won the Royal London One Day Cup, Cam Cricket Club Girls Under-11 side secured victory in the girls’ categories of the eight-a-side soft ball tournament at the historic Lord’s ground by beating their Surrey counterparts from Spencer Park.
The game was extremely close and ended in a tied match. Cam won by having lost fewer wickets.
It was the climaz of a competition that saw more than a thousand children taking part across the country, representing each of the 18 first-class counties.
Cam made it to the finals by winning regional rounds, including the county final taking place at the County Ground, Bristol, during a Royal London One-Day Cup group matchAs well as stepping out onto the hallowed turf and playing in front of a crowd of thousands, the young
winners were also presented with their trophy by England stars Steven Finn and Charlotte Edwards.
Nicola Dickson, manager of Cam Cricket Club’s under-11 girls, said: “The girls, parents and
supporters had a wonderful time and memories were made. It was fantastic for them to meet Steve
Finn and Charlotte Edwards. Their presence just added to the special occasion.”
The England Women’s Captain was assisted on the day by Cam’s Leanne Ealey, nine, who is battling
against Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Although Leanne didn’t play she was still keen to be
involved as Charlotte’s deputy.
Cam’s Womens and Girls successes on the field this season has been matched by their generosity
and enthusiasm for fundraising for CLIC Sargent. This charity supports children and their families,
who like Leanne’s have received this devastating diagnosis. A cheque was presented to Leanne for
£500 by Cam’s Women and girls section Chair June Pritchard.
