Men’s 1st XI
Conference North
Robinsons A 0
Wotton-under-Edge 4

AFTER three pre-season friendlies, Wotton-under-Edge were ready for the first league game of the new season in North Conference.
An invigorated Wotton side began the game at a fast pace, with passes zipping across the pitch.
Both sides created numerous chances; however, the best fell to player-coach Matt Fairburn in the first 10 minutes, whose reverse-stick shot just missed the top corner of the net.
The quick rotations of subs enabled Wotton to maintain their intensity and soon a short corner for Wotton resulted in a tap in for seasoned campaigner Dave Newns.
Back at the other end, it was striker Harry Willcox who saved Wotton by clearing off the line, saving the Wotton blushes.
Wotton continued to play good hockey and soon a second goal followed, this time from Ryan Howarth who opened his account for the season with a well taken finish.
The second-half was an improvement again on the first with strong hockey being played by both sides and several opportunities to increase the lead. The second-half breakthrough was eventually made by Dave Newns who again finished from close range.
Wotton then put the game to bed by Howarth pickpocketing Robinsons' defence and passing to Henry Patteson, for a tap in.
In addition to some great attacking play, there was some imperious defensive work to keep the skilful home side players at bay.
Captain Alistair Hammond was good as first runner at short corners and prevented the Robinson's players getting their shots away.
A good start to the league for Wotton who are looking to stamp their authority on their new league.
