SLIMBRIDGE manager Leon Sterling is looking to beef up his striking options, despite his side winning their second Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West clash on Tuesday evening.
Sterling put in a seven-day notice for some new players last week but confirmed before his side left to play high-flying Swindon Supermarine that the unnamed players were not on their way to Wisloe Road.
Nevertheless, the Swans boss is hopeful of getting some more blood in to boost his frontline sometime soon, although he insisted this was no reflection on his current attackers at his disposal.
Slimbridge are now concentrating on staying in the Southern League, where they are for the first time in their history, after being knocked out of the FA Cup by a powerful North Leigh outfit on Saturday at the first qualifying round stage.
Sterling said: “Before Tuesday, we had won a few cup games but only won one league game. We were never going to win the FA Cup, so we want to string a few league wins together.”
But with only a handful of goals to their name so far in the league, the manager is looking for more goals from all areas of his squad.
Sterling said getting forwards was “something I am looking at”.
He made an approach last week for a couple of players but confirmed on Tuesday: “They decided not to come.”
Sterling added: “We have not scored enough goals and that might change in the future, but I think we need a bit of experience.
“If someone becomes available, I would be interested. If I can get one or two, that would be great. It is not desperate measures, really, it is just that it would be nice.”
And rather than worry players about their own positions, Sterling thinks the squad would embrace some new blood.
“I think the boys would welcome it,” he added.
Slimbridge have a week off league action this Saturday when they Egham United in the FA Trophy Preliminary Round at Wisloe Road.
And that will be a rematch of the two FA Cup preliminary-round ties they played last month that saw Slimbridge go through after extra time, thanks to Adam Mace.
However, they will come back from that game to travel to Taunton on October 10, and the manager said they are determined to stay clear of the relegation dogfight this season.
“There is nothing to suggest we cannot (stay up). In the last few games, we should have picked up points and we deserved a bit more from the last two games.”
He pointed to the 4-1 defeat at leaders North Leigh last Saturday and said: “We will play teams like North Leigh, who have experience and a budget (for players).
“We were OK in the first half against them. We went there with our eyes wide open and know we are not going to win every game we play in this league.”
And the confidence of Sterling has been echoed by the players.
After the victory over Swindon Supermarine, Paul Fahy, who got the first goal in the 2-1 win, said: “Great performance by the boys tonight. Back on winning ways. (It) feels good to be on the scoresheet.”
Now if only the Swans can win at home, where they have drawn three times out of four, that would boost their confidence even more.
