ROVERS crashed out of the FA Cup First Round after losing 1-0 to non-league Chesham at the Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

We thought the tie would offer us a smooth passage into Round Two but unfortunately we were the victims of a cup upset.

The part-timers deserved their victory and all the praise that came their way for toppling a team three divisions higher in the football pyramid than them.

However, the performance was not good enough and Darrell Clarke urgently needs to address our woeful home form before it sees us slipping down the table.

Ryan Blake got the crucial goal 11 minutes from time, but Gas goalie Lee Nicholls should have done better to foil the attempt.

It could have been worse as Chesham missed a penalty in the first half, Nicholls pulling off a great save to keep it out.

Shane Gore in the Chesham goal did pull off a number of good saves himself to prevent the Pirates from scoring throughout the contest, but that does not excuse the shocking result.

The stats may suggest that Rovers dominated and should have gone through, but the performance was poor and we were simply not good enough in front of goal.

Rovers had 25 shots, 10 of which were on target, and 17 corners, but were unable to find the breakthrough.

The ignominy of defeat is bad enough, but the financial implications of failing to achieve a decent cup run are also a blow to the club.

We have not been clinical enough in front of goal at home all season, which is why we have won only one game at the Memorial Stadium.

It seems strange that the same strikers look sharper away from home, but Clarke needs to look to strengthen our attacking options if they cannot produce the same form at the Mem.

Our impressive away form has maintained a decent mid-table position, but if that wavers then we could find ourselves in the bottom half.

Rovers need to bounce back quickly from the Chesham debacle by securing all three points at home to Carlisle on Saturday.
