BRADDEN Johnson continued his great form in the Mountains at the Likeys Beacons Ultra last weekend on a busy few days for Dursley Running Club athletes.

The race is a mere 46-ish miles over mixed terrain. The race organisers state that “climatic conditions can vary quite considerably”.

This year the runners had to contend with high winds this year, whilst having the odd “moment” this did not stop Johnson finishing in eight hours and twenty three minutes.

This was three minutes slower than in 2014 but his 13th place was a huge improvement on 2014’s 21st position.

Tony Freer, Audrey Harris and Margaret Johnson ran Shakespeare Raceway Half Marathon.

It was the brainwave of erstwhile training partner Nigel Sankey. The idea was that all the hard miles put in on Sunday's leading up to the Bristol-Bath Marathon would pay off on a pancake flat airfield course.

The variable that could scupper this otherwise excellent plan was the weather. Cue the remains of Hurricane Kate hitting the UK.

Whilst the flat course aided pacing, the wind made the last hard four miles even harder.

Tony Freer ran a personal best, whilst not achieving his aim of a sub 90 run it was an impressive run given the poor weather conditions.

Sadly, the Strava electronic devices worn by athletes and the course organisers differed in their opinion of the distance, the runners watches recorded a run of about 13.34 miles.

Johnson paced herself better, and both she and Harris were sure they were on for PBs after three laps, but the official times placed them outside their current bests.

On a happier note Johnson won her age category with Freer 6th in his in a field of 254 runners Result: Tony Freer 28th 01:31:17 (6th M45); Margaret Johnson 83rd 01:44:17 (1st FV45); Audrey Harris 123rd 01:53:06 (16th FV35) Eight Dursley athletes went for the shorter 5K Parkrun effort. Gareth Bradbury was fastest this weekend, just under 20 minutes, with Sarah Eden over the moon to break the 30 minute barrier and PB, she was joined by Deb McFarland, Carolyn Thraves and Garry Strickland, the latter heading down towards the lower 20 minutes.

Holly Gardner went one better and made it to the top of the podium coming in first woman overall and first senior woman.

However they could not catch Thornbury Runner Nick Langridge, Langridge who is a second claim Dursley Runner finished in 55.45.8 to place first MV60.
