CITY produced a season’s best performance to sweep aside play-off contenders Sheffield Wednesday at Ashton Gate on Saturday.

The Owls came into the game having won four successive matches but City, keen to make up for a disappointing showing against Rotherham last Tuesday, had this game won by half-time.

City took the lead as early as the tenth minute, in slightly fortuitous circumstances.

Tomlin’s close range effort was stopped on the line by a Wednesday defender who could only clear the ball onto the back of ‘keeper Wildsmith.

The ball rebounded straight into the goal to give us the lead.

Just three minutes later, City doubled their advantage.

Some quick thinking from Korey Smith from a free kick sent Freeman into space and he crossed the ball to young Bristolian Bobby Reid who smashed the ball into the top corner for his first goal of the season. Bobby has had a tough season but undoubtedly has talent and it was great to see him score in front of a home crowd.

Just before half-time, City all but wrapped up victory when Tomlin was brought down in the area following a powerful run.

The man on loan from Bournemouth, described by manager Johnson as a ‘maverick’ after the game, scored the spot-kick to make it 3-0. Tomlin would make a fantastic permanent signing this summer.

Seven minutes into the second-half, City won another penalty.

This time, Kodjia played in Reid who was clumsily taken down by Wildsmith.

With no Tomlin on the pitch, Kodjia stepped up and converted confidently to make it 4-0.

Wednesday pulled a goal back but this day was City’s and all but secures survival in the Championship for another season.

This Saturday, City travel to Griffin Park to face Brentford (3pm). Like Wednesday, the Bees are going into this game in good form but are only six points above City in the table.

We will be looking to avenge a 4-2 home defeat from earlier in the season, backed by a sold out away following of 1,590.
