FOREST Green Rovers chairman Dale Vince wants his side to win the Vanarama National League next season and go up to the Football League for the first time in their history.

Vince was at Wembley on Sunday to see Forest Green go down 3-1 to Grimsby Town after reaching the play-off final for the first time.

And the loss has already seen action on the playing side of the club from new manager Mark Cooper within hours of returning home and contemplating another season in the National League.

Their defeat meant that, after starting the season spectacularly with a terrific run of results that put them on the summit of the division before being overhauled by Cheltenham Town for automatic promotion, Forest Green have been left with nothing tangible except the experience of playing at the home of English football and of having reached the play-offs for a second successive season.

But Vince is not downhearted and the chairman told the BBC: “It was our first time in a Wembley play-off final and it was a great day. It was great for the club and we had great support.

“Two soft goals made it hard on the day but I’m happy. We have made great progress as a club, from tenth (in the league) to fifth, to second, to a Wembley final. So we will take that into next season and win the league – as simple as that.”
