LOCAL cricketers were left kicking their heels on Saturday as the vast majority of matches were cancelled as the first washout of the summer struck the region.

Rockhampton, looking to return to winning ways after last week’s home defeat to Cheltenham, travelled to Goatacre in the West of England Premier Cricket League Premier Two Glos/Wilts division but returned without a ball being bowled.

Rockhampton’s seconds, though, braved the elements and were able to get a number of overs under their belts against Dumbleton in the Gloucestershire County Cricket League Division Three.

Openers Harry Collins (11) and Nigel Hopkins (nine) fell before number three Jeremy White put in a fine display to reach 36 before he was bowled. David Long made 15 and wicketkeeper Davis Newcombe had not scored when the match was abandoned after 26 overs with Rockhampton on 88-3.

Cam’s clash with Kingsholm at Everlands in the Gloucestershire County League Division One was also a total washout as were their third and fourth team games.

But, again, Cam’s second managed a few overs at Gloucester against Kingsholm’s seconds.

Cam won the toss in the Gloucestershire County League Division Seven clash and put Kingsholm into bat.

It looked like Cam were going to run through the home innings with wicketkeeper George Parrott taking five catches behind the stumps, as Kingsholm lost their two openers for ducks.

However, some steady runs in the middle order kept the home side afloat before number eight Harry Emmett hit an unbeaten 51 and tail-ender Alex Gough contributed 25 to take the Gloucester outfit to 161-8 after 45 overs.

Cam’s Richard Mears ended with 3-22 from his six overs, and William Hayward took 2-9 from three overs. But Cam never took the field to bat and the match was abandoned from there.

Oldlands travelled to Frocester but that was in vain as well as was Stone’s clash away at Cinderford St John.

However, Stone’s seconds managed to get going in their Stroud and District Cricket Association Martin Berrill Division One clash against Charfield and, batting first, hit 131-9 before the match was called off.

Elsewhere, Frampton on Severn managed to get thirty overs in during their Gloucestershire County Cricket League Division Two clash with Thornbury seconds at home, with Thornbury making 145-6.

Thornbury’s clash with Biddestone was called off without a ball being bowled as was their fourth team’s game at Hanham.

But Thornbury thirds also got 27 overs in at home to Bristol YMCA at Tockington Manor School. Bristol YMCA won the toss and chose to field in the Bristol and District Cricket Association Division Nine clash.

However, their choice backfired as Thornbury’s openers Ali Dury and Tom Wilson went to town. Wilson hit six fours before he was caught for 56, but Dury remained at the crease until the game was abandoned, walking off with unbeaten on 78 that included 13 boundaries and a six.

Chipping Sodbury’s West of England Premier Cricket League Gloucestershire division game at home to Stroud was also cancelled, although their seconds and thirds did managed some play.
