WOTTON-under-Edge forward Sean Rigg has landed a new role in League Two after helping AFC Wimbledon to gain promotion last season.

The 27-year-old, who attended Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School in Wotton as a youngster, has put his name to a contract and joined Welsh side Newport County AFC.

The striker made more than forty appearances for AFC Wimbledon last season as the London club raced to the top of League Two and were promoted to League One via the play-offs at Wembley Stadium in May.

Rigg was released by the Dons the day after that successful play-off adventure at Wembley and was an unused substitute in their 2-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle that day.

After travelling to South Wales for his medical on Tuesday morning, Rigg expressed his eagerness to hit the ground running with the Exiles in preparation for next season as Newport look to make up for a terrible campaign in 2015/16 and push towards the top end of the table.

Rigg, who can also play on the wing, said: “I’m delighted to have signed for Newport County AFC.

“This time of year is obviously a stressful time for players and you want to get your future sorted as soon as possible, so I’m buzzing that a deal has been agreed and now I’m looking forward to the start of pre-season.

“I took to Warren (Feeney, manager) straight away and that was a big draw in me signing.

“I was looking to get back to the South-West area, so this move ticks all the boxes for me.

“Newport County AFC is a club that is on the up, so it’s an exciting time to be joining the club.”

Manager Feeney spoke of his delight at securing the signing of Rigg and believes his experience of promotion out of League Two will be a big benefit.

“Sean has got the experience of promotion from this level, so that is obviously going to be a huge benefit to us.

“I remember Sean from his time at Port Vale where he was used as a striker, but he also gives you an option out wide, which will help us tremendously.

“He has got the right mentality to succeed in this division and what I like most about him is that he is a very loyal character and I’m sure that he will be a very good addition for us.”

Rigg began his career in the junior set-up at Forest Green Rovers where he was in the Under-18s and returned on loan before spells at Bristol Rovers, Port Vale and Oxford United. He returned to Forest Green as a loanee under former manager David Hockaday.

Newport also signed wing Jack Compton from Portsmouth on Tuesday.
