BRISTOL City maintained their unbeaten start to the 2016/17 campaign with another last gasp victory at Burton Albion on Saturday but lost to Norwich on Tuesday

The Burton game had marked similarities with the Wigan one on the opening day of the season, with a scrappy performance from City and a late, late winner.

Unlike the Wigan game however it was City who took the lead at Burton. Just before half-time Magnusson sent a long throw into the box and O’Dowda guided the ball towards goals only for Abraham to help guide the ball home in true goal-poacher fashion.

In the second half, Burton took a hold of the game and looked dangerous with Lloyd Dyer doing a lot of their best work.

We still looked disjointed as a team with marquee summer signing Lee Tomlin continuing to struggle in this very early part of the season.

It remains to be seen if we can accommodate him, Abraham and Kodjia effectively in our starting 11. Tomlin is a natural number ten and I’m not convinced we’ll see the best of him playing behind two out-and-out strikers.

Burton got what was a deserved equaliser in the 88th minute when right-back Little failed to clear the ball and Naylor found himself in acres of space at the far post to drive the ball home.

But City showed resilience on the opening day and again at Burton as Kodjia broke free down the right and crossed the ball to Abraham who bundled the ball home to send the away end into raptures and give City all three points.

On Tuesday night, City were defeated 1-0 by Norwich City at Carrow Road. This was actually a better performance from us than the Burton or Wigan games but the Canaries will be strong promotion contenders this season and just edged us out with that little bit of extra quality.

This Saturday, City host Newcastle United at Ashton Gate with a crowd of over 21,500 expected, City’s highest in 22 years.

The game against Rafa Benitez’s team will signal the opening of the top tier of the new West Stand, albeit with a significantly reduced capacity.

It promises to be a great occasion and one that hopefully City can secure a result in, given the Magpies stuttering start.
