Gloucester All Blues 0 Wotton 38

WOTTON started their league campaign on Saturday against old foes Gloucester All Blues.

The hosts started strongly and pressured the Wotton try line but great defence, led by the hard hitting Jon Muckle, Darren Thomas and Tom Gibbs repelled All Blues advances.

Dai Lloyd and Dan Page were very comfortable dealing with any kicks over the top and cleared their lines effectively.

Wotton broke the deadlock when stand in scrum half Olli Boyle stole the ball from an All Blues rolling maul and released Sam Chappell.

He broke through before passing to debutant Steve Wilkins to score, with Wilkins converting his own try.

Wotton then scored the try of the game.

It came from a defensive scrum where the ball found its way to Gibbs who released Gee Davies at fly half.

From there, the ball was passed along the line with Alex Irons speeding away to score the touchdown which Wilkins converted.

Wotton were on top and upped the tempo further in the second half with Will Driver and James Needs prominent.

This led to a Wotton penalty that Wilkins duly booted.

Davies was starting to control the game and stretched the home sides defence.

The pressure was too much for the hosts and Chappell released club captain Boyle who glided through a gap to race into the corner for another try.

Wilkins effortlessly converted from out wide.

Matt Barton, who was outstanding, added the bonus point try with a smart finish.

Wilkins, on fire, again converted.

Wotton ended the game with a piece of individual brilliance from Huw Edwards.

The talented youngster went on a mazy run, leaving defenders in his wake as he danced through to score.

Wilkins kept up his perfect kicking with the conversion to end his debut with 18 points.
