Wotton-under-Edge 3 Team Bath Buccs1

LEAGUE leaders Wotton-under-Edge hosted Team Bath Buccs in a key fixture for the boys in blue.

With the team seeking a win after a disappointing draw in the reverse fixture in November, the home side started brightly and created several chances which on another day would have opened the scoring.

Coach-player Matt Fairburn saw his drag flick sneak high over the bar and Ryan Howarth and Rob Davies also saw good opportunities saved by an on-form bath keeper.

The deadlock was finally broken by Fairburn, who finished neatly from close range.

Bath Buccs started to find their rhythm and created chances of their own which were well-defended by George Eskins, Lampkin, James Cruickshank, Henry Patteson and captain Alistair Hammond.

Wotton were then able to extend their lead through a Harry Willcox deflection high into the net.

In the second half, Wotton’s hockey didn’t flow as well as usual and mistakes crept into their game.

Despite tenacious and skilful play by player-of-the-match Dan Jones, Bath’s pressure finally told and the visitors pegged a goal back.

Determined not to throw the game away, Wotton continued to attack and Fairburn doubled his goal tally for the game with a neat far post reverse stick finish.
