The Marches 2 League
Wotton-under-Edge 4ths (C) 3 Wotton-under-Edge 5ths 2
IT WAS a determined men's fifth team who turned out, seeking victory in this most local Wotton-under-Edge derby, but in the end the more youthful legs of the fourth team squad won the day.
The 5th XI fought well from the first whistle and were unlucky to concede a goal. However, they fought back and an equaliser, courtesy of player-of-the-match Adam Hanney, from a penalty corner, was soon their reward.
Continuing to fight, with wave after wave of attacking play, the M5s were eventually rewarded with a penalty flick, ably pounded home by Hanney to close the first half at 2-1.
The 5s came back out for the second half knowing that the relative youth and fitness of the 4s would provide a challenge; they were not wrong conceding two goals.
The final score did not reflect the dedication and passion demonstrated by the Wotton 5th XI, a team in their first season of hockey.
