GLOUCESTERSHIRE captain Phil Mustard admitted his side struggled on the first day of their Specsavers County Championship second division clash with Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Centuries from Indian Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara and Michael Lumb helped Nottinghamshire into a position of dominance on the opening day.

Nottinghamshire totalled 357 for five, after being invited to bat first after Gloucestershire won the toss.

Mustard said: “I thought we didn’t bowl as well as we could have done early doors and thought we could have put them under a little bit more pressure with the new ball but that’s just the way that cricket is.

“We came back fighting after lunch and consolidated a little bit and then it was nice getting the reward near the end with two wickets, so, all in all, we’ve had a bit of an up and down day.”
