LAST week I stated that I felt we needed a minimum of four points from our two games over the Easter weekend – against Barnsley and Brentford - to be in with a shout of making the play-offs.

We took just one point (from the Barnsley game) to continue our long run of poor form since the turn of the year.

Amazingly, we still lie just a point off sixth-placed Middlesbrough as they too slipped up over the weekend and gained just a solitary point.

It’s incredible how we have been so poor this calendar year, yet have a strong mathematical chance of making the promised land that is the Premier League.

However, I maintain that I have seen nothing from us this year to give any confidence we will finish in the top six; despite the failings of teams around us.

In terms of level of performance, we seem to be getting worse rather than better and at this stage of the season you want to be reaching your peak.

Barnsley have been in and around the relegation zone for most of the season but they were the better side in our encounter at Oakwell on Good Friday.

The stats were brutal and showed that the hosts had 23 shots at goal to our eight, this is simply not the form of a promotion chasing team.

We were extremely lucky to escape with a 2-2 draw.

Things were even worse on Easter Monday.

Brentford are a far more capable outfit than Barnsley, and so they proved it.

City were poor from start to finish with Brentford dominating possession and recording an incredible 27 shots at goal to our two.

That’s simply awful for a home side and the performance again showed the baffling downturn in form since the dizzy heights of October – December last year and the memorable performances in the Carabao Cup.

Thankfully The Bees were extremely wasteful in front of goal and the 1-0 score line flattered City.

We have two more games this coming week.

First, a visit to The New Den on Saturday (3pm) to face Neil Harris’ in-form Millwall.

Then, relegation threatened Birmingham City visit Ashton Gate on Tuesday (7.45pm) who themselves have won three games on the spin at time of writing.
